A note before the reading for the week.

The year is ending. Well, we are still meeting up every week despite the holidays.

For those of you interested in joining us please drop us a mail before appearing. In case we have a full table of 8 people. (That is the max for 1 reading group).

About Rowell Reading Group

Rowell Reading Group meets every Sunday from 5.30pm to 7 pm at 109, Rowell Road, Little India, Singapore. Besides Tien and Jennifer who anchor Food #03 and the Post- Museum, there are two regulars who take turns to choose the reading for each week - an article or a book chapter.

The group is generally open to anyone who cares to join and is willing to take the time to read anywhere between 20 to 40 pages in any given week - just send an email by Wednesday if you want to join us on the following Sunday so that we can email you the reading selection.

Readings are generally selected with a view to elaborate a Singaporean perspective on issues of global significance. For example, when we began three weeks ago, we read a detailed study by Joshua Comaroff that sought to interpret the hungry ghosts festival in Singapore as ritualized enactment of resistance against rapid restructuring of the urban landscape.

At first it seemed like this was an article on a local phenomenon, but as we began to share our thoughts we realized that we were actually talking about at least three very important conceptual frames: 1) the nature of urban spaces in non European contexts - where every street corner has a shrine or a grave commemorating a rupture with the past 2) the role of memory, fantasy and imaginative in shaping cultural practices that have a significant bearing on political and economic practices.
